New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): After a meeting with Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and party MP Rahul Gandhi, Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra Singh on Monday said that the party will raise the Manipur issue in the Parliament.
“We had a discussion over the Manipur issues and raising it in the Parliament. There have many incidents that took place in Manipur, that were discussed in the meeting,” Singh told ANI.
The Congress on Monday met the party leaders of Manipur and discussed ways to alleviate their pain.
Earlier, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday criticised the central government over the Manipur issue.
“This time, Manipur voted for compassion, peace and harmony. PM Modi’s abject apathy towards the people of Manipur was resoundingly rejected. BJP’s state Government is complicit in failing to prevent violence, even as tens of thousands of people still suffer the unending circle of turmoil,” Kharge posted on X.
On June 17, Union Home Minister Amit Shah did a holistic review of the security situation in Manipur in a high-level meeting here in the national capital and directed to ensure that “no further incident of violence takes place” in the northeastern state.
In the one-hour-long meeting at his North Block office, the Home Minister stressed upon strategic deployment of the central forces to restore peace and tranquillity in Manipur.
Shah mentioned in the meeting that the “forces will be increased if required”, and directed that “strict action must be taken as per law against the perpetrators of violence.”
The Home Minister directed the Chief Secretary of Manipur to ensure proper health and education facilities for the displaced people and their rehabilitation.
He underscored the importance of a coordinated approach to resolve the ongoing ethnic conflict.’
He said that the Ministry of Home Affairs will talk to both the groups, Meiteis and Kukis, so as to bridge the ethnic divide, at the earliest, adding “the Central government has been actively supporting the Manipur government in strengthening the security situation in the state.”
The northeastern state has been witnessing ethnic violence since May 3 last year following clashes during a rally organised by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) to protest against the demand for the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category.
In fresh violence, several houses belonging to both Meitei and Kuki communities were burned by unknown miscreants in Kotlen following the murder of a person earlier this month, the Manipur Police said.
Around 600 people from Manipur’s Jiribam area are now taking shelter in Assam’s Cachar district following fresh violence reported in Manipur’s Jiribam area. (ANI)
