Wayanad (Kerala) [India], August 14 (ANI): The cabinet sub-committee in the landslide-hit Wayanad district said on Wednesday that there is no legal obstacle to receiving government benefits, including financial assistance and compensation for landslide disaster victims.
The cabinet sub-committee said that financial assistance of Rs 10,000 each has been made available to 379 families directly affected by the Mundakai-Churalmala disaster.
“Payment was made through bank accounts. Those who have lost their passbook, those who do not remember their account number, if they inform which bank the account is in, the concerned bank will find and deposit the money. For those who do not remember the bank details, the amount will be paid based on the person’s address by checking with the banks. If this is not available, then a new account will be opened at zero balance and the amount will be paid,” the sub-committee said.
The members of the committee also informed that instead of the inheritance certificate for receiving the benefits, a certificate will be issued to the next of kin of the deceased person as the heir.
The committee also asserted that people should not visit the Mundakai-Churalmala area unnecessarily.
“Except for various forces, volunteers and personnel, those entering the area should stay away. police will establish general control in the area. The search for missing people will continue in the coming days. In each of the currently inspected areas, two inspections have been completed. If people ask for re-inspection in areas where they have already been tested, it will be done,” it said.
“12 teams are inspecting six local body limits to streamline the rehabilitation activities. A dead body and three body parts were recovered from Nilambur Kumbalapara on August 13 and were cremated on Wednesday (August 14). So far 231 dead bodies and 221 dead bodies have been found in the Mundakai-Churalmala disaster. So far 420 people have been sent for DNA testing,” it added.
The Cabinet sub-committee also mentioned that the government aims to protect all animals and species that are affected by natural calamities.
“As a part of that, the Animal Welfare Department was instructed to prepare a list of stray animals in the region. Steps have been taken to restore gas connection to all those moving from camps to rented houses. The committee said that under the leadership of the Sanitation Mission, the segregation and disposal of waste in the disaster area is commendable,” the committee said
Ministers K. Rajan, AK Saseendran, and District Collector DR Meghasree participated in the press conference held at the Collectorate Mini Conference Hall. (ANI)
