Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 14 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday that the recent brutal killings in Bangladesh are a reminder of India’s painful partition days. He added that by observing ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’, India also remembers Hindus in Pakistan who had decided to stay there but had to suffer religious fanaticism.
“The country of Pakistan was born after bloodshed. On this horror day of partition, we remember those who made the supreme sacrifice during the partition of the country. On this day, we also remember those unfortunate Hindus who decided to stay in Pakistan without returning to India,” Sarma told reporters here.
“Today, they are the victims of religious fanaticism. They are victims of murder and violence. The recent brutal killings in Bangladesh are a reminder of the painful partition days. We are observing this year’s Partition Horror Day in a special context and that context is the brutal attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.
“They were once victims of partition and today they are also victims of partition. On this day, we pledge once again to ensure that our country is not divided again,” he added.
On August 14, India observes ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ to pay tribute to those who lost their lives and were displaced during the country’s partition in 1947.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the victims of partition on Wednesday, emphasising the importance of honouring their courage, which exemplifies the resilience of the human spirit.
Taking to the social media platform X, PM Modi wrote, “On #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay, we remember the countless people who were deeply impacted and suffered due to the horrors of Partition. It is also a day to pay tribute to their courage, which illustrates the power of human resilience. Many of those affected by Partition went on to rebuild their lives and achieve immense success. Today, we also reaffirm our commitment to always protect the bonds of unity and brotherhood in our nation.”
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid homage, stating, “Today, on ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day,’ I pay tribute to the millions who endured unimaginable suffering, lost their lives, and were rendered homeless during one of history’s most brutal episodes. Only by remembering this history and learning from it can a nation build a strong future and emerge as a power. The tradition of observing this day, initiated by Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji, is a significant step towards nation-building.” (ANI)
