Junagadh (Gujarat) [India], August 10 (ANI): Reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Saturday celebrated ‘World Lion Day’ in an event in Saurashtra region.
CM Patel stressed the collective responsibility to protect animals and nature, highlighting that the real celebration of World Lion Day lies in the efforts to ensure the natural habitat and growth of the Asiatic lions in Gujarat.
The Chief Minister called for World Lion Day to inspire empathy towards all living beings and to promote a culture of conservation. He shared an instance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s compassion during Cyclone Tauktae, where PM Modi guided sensitive care for both humans and wildlife.
He further emphasized the importance of living in harmony with nature and supporting the peaceful coexistence of all species. He praised the efforts of the Maldharis (cattle herders) and local residents who have contributed to the increasing population of Asiatic lions in Gir.
The Chief Minister also referenced the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign and the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ tree-planting initiative led by the Prime Minister, hightlighting the importance of national pride and environmental conservation.
He pointed out the issue of global warming due to deforestation, and called for heightened environmental care. He urged participants, especially students, to learn from such events and contribute to environmental protection by reducing plastic use.
On this occasion, the Chief Minister responded favourably to MP Rajeshbhai Chudasama’s request for road construction between Talala and Mendarda.
Minister Mulubhai Bera conveyed his wishes for World Lion Day and highlighted that Asiatic lions are a source of pride for both India and Gujarat. He noted that Gir has become a popular tourist destination due to its natural beauty and ongoing conservation efforts, supported by local people and the forest department.
Bera mentioned that Asiatic lions are found only in the Saurashtra region, and emphasized the role of public participation in their conservation. He also shared that awareness messages were sent to 75 lakh people via text and 3 lakh people via email, and that various events including rallies and art competitions were organized in 11 districts with lion populations.
He provided statistics on the lion population, stating that a census in 2020 recorded 674 lions in Gir. Various measures are being undertaken for their conservation, including habitat management, dietary support, and rehabilitation.
At the event, the Chief Minister and dignitaries released books on Asiatic lion conservation and distributed checks totaling 89 lakh rupees to Eco Development Committees for collective development efforts. An audio-visual presentation showcasing conservation activities in Gir and a message from Union Minister of Forests and Environment Bhupendra Yadav were also featured. (ANI)
